GEORGETOWN, KENTUCKY, (April 21, 2010) —It’s the 40th anniversary of Earth Day and TMMK celebrated with a variety of activities, one of which was open to Scott County students. One hundred second graders from Garth Elementary in Scott County (KY) visited TMMK's Environmental Education Center and Nature Trail to participate in the second annual Environmental Field Day.
The students were split into groups and allowed to participate in three activity sessions, lasting 30 minutes each. Sessions covered a host of topics that captured the students’ attention. The children performed water sampling in Cattail Lake, baked s'mores using solar ovens and shared a laugh while running an environmental-themed relay race. The day concluded with students taking an Earth Day environmental pledge.
Team members from Facilities Control, Environmental Engineering and Community Relations were paired with Garth teachers and volunteers from the Kentucky Division for Air Quality, Bluegrass PRIDE, Life Adventure Center of the Bluegrass, Georgetown College and the Scott County Conservation District to answer any questions the students had.
The Nature Trail is available for tours. If you’d like to make arrangements for your child’s class to tour the trail contact the Visitor Center to book a guided tour. There is a curriculum available as a companion piece to the tour and appropriate for students grades four through high school.
